State Issued ID Requirement for Tax Year 2016
This additional verification measure for personal income tax preparation software commences with tax year 2016 and the information is required for New York State personal income tax returns that are prepared using software. The requirement applies to driver licenses or state-issued IDs from any state.
Key information to know:
- Taxpayers can refuse to provide a driver’s license number. Note, however, the state needs to authenticate the return and delays and rejections may occur if the information is not provided.
- The requirement applies to spouses, as well, for those taxpayers filing joint returns.
- For NYS-issued licenses or IDs, they also require the taxpayer/tax professional to enter the document number .
- If the taxpayer does not have a driver license or state-issued ID, they’ll be given an option to indicate that they don’t have either one. This will fulfill the requirement.
